Only a small percentage of cypress trees develop "pecky" characteristics, with estimates suggesting less than 10% of all cypress trees are affected by the fungus that creates the distinctive holes, making it a prized and scarce specialty wood for decorative uses like paneling and beams. The unique deep pockets and voids are caused by Stereum taxodii, a naturally occurring fungus that stops when the tree is harvested, leaving behind its signature look.
